What is men’s health?

Men’s health is a branch of medicine focused on diagnosing, treating, and preventing illness in men. Men and women experience many of the same health problems, but men are far less likely than their female counterparts to invest in regular checkups and/or undergo preventive screenings and exams. As a result, they’re also more likely to die at an early age and experience serious health problems like obesity, heart disease, and certain types of cancer.

What does men’s health include?

At Essential Medical Clinic, the providers offer a wide range of men’s health services, including:

Blood pressure screenings

Blood pressure is one of the leading causes of heart attacks and stroke. However, it doesn’t present any obvious symptoms. As a result, you might have high blood pressure and not even realize it. The American Heart Association recommends all men undergo a blood pressure screening at least once every two years.

Cholesterol screenings

Cholesterol is a fatty, waxlike substance found in your blood. Everyone needs some cholesterol to survive, but too much cholesterol increases your risk of heart attack or stroke. You can significantly lower your risk of high cholesterol by eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

Colorectal cancer screenings

All men between the ages of 50-75 should participate in colorectal cancer screenings. This is especially true if you have a family history of colon cancer and/or colon polyps. You might also benefit if you have a history of inflammatory bowel disease or another digestion-related health problem.

Prostate exams

The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland responsible for producing seminal fluid. As you get older, your prostate grows in size. Though this is completely normal, it also increases your risk of prostate cancer. A prostate exam can alert you to a malignant growth

How often should I participate in a men’s health exam?

The providers at Essential Medical Clinic recommend you participate in a men’s health exam at least once each year, even if you feel healthy. Many serious health problems such as heart disease and diabetes don’t present symptoms in their early stages.

In addition to preserving your physical health, a men’s health exam presents an opportunity to build a relationship with your doctor. It’s also a great time to ask questions or to bring up any unusual symptoms you’ve noticed.

Whether you’ve recently moved to the Los Angeles area or you simply want to establish care with a new physician, the team at Essential Medical Clinic can help. Request your men’s health appointment today by calling the office nearest you or by clicking the online scheduling tool.
